D2L: Regular Use of Sunday Morning Maintenance Window
Beginning on Sunday, August 17, 2008, and continuing until further notice, we will use the 5 AM to 9 AM Sunday morning maintenance window to rebuild D2L database indexes, which is a resource-intensive process. Due to the excessive size of the database, which continues to grow each semester, rebuilding the indexes takes a longer and longer period of time. Until the size of the database can be reduced by purging old data and old courses, this will remain an issue.
The D2L system will not be available to users during the maintenance window on Sunday mornings. While we may not always need to use the entire four-hour window, users should plan their usage of D2L around the maintenance window of 5 AM to 9 AM. Whenever the maintenance work is completed in less than four hours, the system will become available to users earlier.
For the past several years, we have reserved Sunday mornings from 5-9 AM and Tuesday mornings from 5-7 AM as maintenance windows to perform updates and routine maintenance to the hardware and software that support our self-hosted D2L instance. The routine maintenance does not result in changes to the user interface of D2L. Campus Site Administrators and Campus Trainers are notified via email a week or two in advance of any downtime window that will actually be used.
